This week in Year 4, students continue to investigate flowering plants and their role in the ecosystem. They will be using our kitchen garden spaces around the school to observe the life-cycle of flowering plants. In Maths, we are looking at multiplication strategies and how to multiply large numbers (two digit by one digit). Students investigate the 'distributive law' which enables large numbers to be 'broken' into smaller, friendly numbers for simple multiplication,, then combined again to find the total.
For example, 17 x 6 can be thought of as 10 x 6 + 7 x 6.

Instant recall of times tables to 10 x 10 is absolutely essential for students to progress toward solving multiplication problems involving two digit numbers. Ask your child about the strategies they use to quickly and efficiently recall times table number facts.
